Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders

The lecture deals with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders as part of extrapyramidal diseases. Parkinson's disease is presented as a complex multi-organ and multi-neurotransmitter neurodegenerative disease with motor and non-motor symptoms, with dopamine deficiency playing a key role.

The lecture also describes genetic and environmental factors, epidemiology and the development of diagnostic criteria from preclinical stages to clinically manifest disease. The next part is devoted to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of parkinsonism, including the use of imaging methods and response to dopaminergic treatment. It includes an overview of pharmacological treatment, advanced therapeutic options (e.g. deep brain stimulation) and management of complications. The lecture also includes other movement disorders, such as atypical parkinsonisms, dystonias, tremors or chorea, and emphasizes the importance of an individual and multidisciplinary approach to the patient.
