Dementia - Neurology 1

The lecture addresses the issue of dementia, a progressive syndrome characterized by a decline in cognitive functions that interferes with the affected individual's daily life. The introduction explains the basic concepts, types of dementia, and their prevalence, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease as the most common form of dementia.

An important part of the diagnostic process is the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) – a brief screening tool used to assess cognitive functions such as memory, attention, orientation, language, and calculation abilities. The test helps determine the degree of impairment and monitor the progression of the disease. The lecture also highlights other types of dementia, such as vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body dementia, and discusses the differences in clinical presentation and disease progression.
