The lecture focuses on a neurological perspective of clinically significant diseases affecting the central or peripheral nervous system. Prion diseases are rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorders of the CNS caused by the pathological conformation of prion proteins. The most common is Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. AIDP (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) is the most common form of Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS).
CIDP (chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) is the chronic counterpart of AIDP. Herpes zoster affects nerve ganglia and the corresponding dermatomes following the reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus. The lecture provides an integrated view of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and neurological management of these diseases. Emphasis is placed on early recognition, differential diagnosis, and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.
